on the chuck hagel vote on armed services. when john mccain comes in as a critic and ends up having to defend chuck hagel because of the very sharp attack from ted cruz. let's watch. >> we saw with his nomination something truly extraordinary which is the government of iran formally and publicly praising the nomination of a defense secretary. i would suggest to you that is unprecedented to see a foreign nation like iran publicly celebrating a nomination. >> i want to put on the record that this senator feels like that senator cruz has gone over the line. he basically has impugned the patriotism of the nominee. >> senator hagel is an honorable man. he's served his country, and no one on this committee at anytime should impugn his character or his integrity. >> so, chuck todd, ted cruz has made a mark already. this isn't the first instance? >> no, he's not. i've been thinking about this, this new -- if you want to say this is more evidence. but you know, i remember a young rick santorum coming in breaking some traditions. >> boy, did he. >> breaking when he did this, three, four, five years lat

so over the line that even john mccain who lamb basted hagel a week ago came to the senator's defense. >> senator hagel is an honorable man. he has served his country and no one on this committee at any time should impugn his character or his integrity. >> that's what cruz was doing. and john boehner couldn't stick to the script today for the softer, gentler, kinder gop. he told reporters at a breakfast briefing that obama doesn't have -- this is the new phrase. he doesn't have the guts to cut spending. today more republican intransigents are holding up again by demanding the speaker -- actually harry reid from nevada come up with 60 votes to move forward the vote. and senator rand paul put a hold on president obama's pick. joining me now is salon's joan walsh and washington post's dana milbank. they can't beat these people so they're doing this obstructing. they're trying to smear this guy. they know he's going to be secretary of defense. there is absolutely no purpose in what cruz is doing except trying to move he's more obnoxious than neocons are. they're just messing around with t

's republicans and democrats on multiple fronts. >> thank you. >>> arizona senator john mccain will not participate in a filibuster against john hagel but republican nomination against him appears for firm. south carolina's lindsay graham hopes the president reconsiders hagel's nomination. he says these are dangerous time and hagel seemed clueless about u.s. policy toward iran. >>> president obama will go to israel in the spring. the white house says the president will visit the west bank in jordan as well. it's released no date for the trip but israel's channel 10 reports it's scheduled for the 20th of march. this will be mr. obama's first visit to israel at president. >>> there was a lot of action on the immigration front. our chief congressional correspondents explain while almost everyone agrees on the problem there's a lot of disagreement about the solution. >> this is about trying to get it right on behalf of the american people. >> house speaker john boehner says solving the immigration is not a race and praised the bipartisan you gang of eight. >> i'm going to applaud m

. and the gop is losing latino support. john mccain got 31%. romney only got 27%. i suspect that rubio is not only being used for his talents. >> i think the republicans are trying to rebrand this. but let's look at rubio's numbers. rubio, among the latinos in florida, he overwhelmingly won the cuban vote. but he didn't win the rest of the latino vote. when you look at history where he actually looks at, he attacks, for example, private education. and i think, again, that's the only way you're going to win the latino vote is to start talking to them straight. >> is he a leading contender for 2016. and does this further embellish if he does well on tuesday night? >> again, they're reintroducing the brand. and he's the headliner for that. he can't backtrack like he did so quickly on immigration. >> so on climate change and a lot of things, he's all over the place. >> he basically has to identify the problem with the republican party. i also encourage him to start talking a little bit about he keeps saying he doesn't believe in govt entitlement programs. unfortunately, right now, the gove

sweeping cuts to the defense department. then you have big crystal, john mccain even floating the idea maybe he would be okay with more revenue as long as it meant getting the revenue off the sequester. the interesting thing here, march one is the deadline in the sequester. you also have then, three or four weeks later, the continuing resolution coming up. so it is not out of the question to me that republicans may be forced to kind of go over the cliff with the sequester and then basically restore the funding levels later in the continuing resolution. and maybe that is where they can pull the victory out. >> we have a clarification about something that could be discussed in any kind of grand bargain, and that is the white house position on the medicare eligibility age. let's listen to that. >> is the president open to raising the eligibility age for medicare? >> no, absolutely not. the president has made clear that we don't believe that is the right policy to take. >> well, krystal, i'll check that off. that signals that. that is not going to be in any package. >> yeah, that had kind

with chuck hagel. >> i want to play something that senator john mccain said on fox news thursday and get your take on the other side. take a listen. >> there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was a republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly, he was very anti-his own party and people. people don't forget that. >> and that, my friend, is exactly what you just said, general, speaks exactly to what you just said. what kind of relationship will he have with congress once he's confirmed. >> well he's going to represent the national security interest of the united states up there so i think the question is really what kind of relationship does congress have with him? these men and women in the united states senate, in the congress, need to respect chuck hagel and they need to work with him and that's their obligation as elected representatives of the american people, just like it's his obligation to work with them. he'll do the best he can. he'll be straightforward. he'll be honest. maybe there will be some lingering resentments, but there shouldn't be. >> john allen,
